- Work historyIn the original theatrical release, the actors John Sharp (Dr Ewan), John Hallam (PC McTaggart) and Tony Roper (postman), although listed in the rolling cast list at the end of the film, did not actually appear as their scenes had been cut. In the 'Extended Version' their scenes were reinserted, and changes made to the opening credits as follows. In the original theatrical release, the cast running order in the opening credits was Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, Christopher Lee, Roy Boyd, Leslie Mackie, Walter Carr, Irene Sunter, Lindsay Kemp, Ian Campbell, Kevin Collins, Aubrey Morris, Russell Waters, Donald Eccles and Geraldine Cowper. In the 'Extended Version, the opening running order is Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, Christopher Lee, Roy Boyd, John Sharp, Walter Carr, Leslie Mackie, Lindsay Kemp, Irene Sunter, Kevin Collins, Ian Campbell, Russell Waters, John Hallam, Donald Eccles, Aubrey Morris and Geraldine Cowper. Additionally, Christopher Lee's name is highlighted within a box in the 'Extended Version, whereas in the theatrical release he is simply credited 'and Christopher Lee' minus any box. The rolling cast list at the end of the film is the same in both versions. In both versions, the name of actress Irene Sunters, while spelt as such in the closing credits, is spelt Sunter in the opening credits. Similarly with Lesley Mackie, whose name is spelt Leslie Mackie in the opening credits, but Lesley in the closing. The following statement precedes the opening credits in both versions: 'The Producer would like to thank The Lord Summerisle and the people of his island off the west coast of Scotland for this privileged insight into their religious practices and for their generous co-operation in the making of this film.'
